Cordance Taps NeuStar to Manage First Universal Private Address Offering
“I-Name Services” Let Users Keep a Single, Private Identity Across All Network Types and Communication Methods - First Full-Scale Test Will Include 150,000 Users and Set the Stage for Global Launch in Early 2005
Digital ID World Conference 2004, Denver, CO October 25, 2004
Cordance Corporation today announced it has tapped NeuStar Inc. the communications industry’s trusted source for essential inter-carrier communications to manage the global registry for a groundbreaking universal private address service. The registry will process user requests for "i-names" from third-party service brokers.
"It was crucial for us to choose a registry manager that had the trust of the telecommunications and Internet industries,” said Vince Caluori, President and CEO of Cordance. "NeuStar is the gold standard when bridging multiple networks and we have to allow users to maintain a single, private identity regardless of network type or communication method.”
I-names are the first opportunity for users to keep a single, private identity across all network types and communication methods. The global i-name registry is based on the XRI (Extensible Resource Identifier) specifications developed by OASIS, the industry's leading XML e-business standards body. NeuStar is including XRI support in its new ISX (Identity Services eXchange) platform also being announced today.
“This service is a critical step towards developing new valuable application addressing technology, supporting the work of supporting the work of the OASIS XRI and XDI TCs” said Mark Foster, NeuStar chief technology officer. "In bringing together experts to support this first, Cordance has again shown its leadership in improving identity management."
The market for universal private address services is expected to top $100 million by 2008. I-names will be used by both individuals and organizations to establish and maintain trusted, long-term relationships that will not break when conventional contact data changes. They will also facilitate automated, privacy-protected data exchange and synchronization using the XDI (XRI Data Interchange) specifications under development at OASIS.
Full-Scale Test Will Double As Open-Source Fundraiser
The initial test of i-name global registry services is being offered by Identity Commons, an international membership association establishing trusted electronic identity infrastructure. Developed in conjunction with XDI.ORG, the international non-profit governance authority for i-name infrastructure, the test program will be open to 150,000 users who wish to participate in a full-scale test phase.
Registration of a global personal i-name for a 50-year term costs $25 USD and includes one free year of account hosting from 2idi, the program’s official i-broker. All proceeds after expenses will be used by Identity Commons and its participating communities to further develop open source Internet identity software.
The program will run for 90 days or until the allotted 150,000 global personal i-names have been registered. Unlimited global i-name registration services for both personal and business i-names is expected to begin soon after the completion of the test program.
Personal Contact Link First, Single Sign-On to Follow
The first service available to registrants is a personal contact link that solves the problem of how to maintain a long-term Internet address without fear of spam.
"With an i-name contact link you can finally publish an Internet address that can't be harvested by a spammer," said Drummond Reed, Cordance’s chief technology officer and co-chair of the OASIS XRI and XDI (XRI Data Interchange) Technical Committees. "Legitimate contacts can always use it to reach you, but spammers can't get through because your i-broker will verify the contact request first."
The next planned service is i-name single sign-on (ISSO), which will let users log on to any ISSO-enabled website using their i-name and i-broker account password. "ISSO is a wonderful example of the synergy of OASIS standards," added Mr. Reed. "It combines the XRI specifications for i-name resolution with the SAML specifications and Liberty Alliance framework for sharing security assertions, making single sign-on practical on an Internet scale."
